Expectations for Conventions

(Each grade builds on the grade before; therefore, 1st grade is responsible for skills from K and 1st; 2nd is responsible for skills from K, 1, and 2; and so on)

NCRA YA 2014 ROUND SMALL-01

Kindergarten

  • Use capital letters in names and the word “I.”

First Grade

  • Spell three to four letter words correctly based on phonics.
  • Use complete sentences.
  • Make use of basic capitalization and punctuation.

Second Grade

  • Spell correctly based on phonics.
  • Use proper capitalization and punctuation.

Third Grade

  • Use correct capitalization and punctuation.
  • Use paragraphs to organize prose writing.
  • Demonstrate correct subject/verb agreement.

Fourth-Sixth Grade

  • Use correct capitalization and punctuation.
  • Use verb tense correct for subject.
  • Use pronouns properly.
  • Vary sentence structure.
  • Use words properly.

Seventh Grade-Adults

  • Use words free from errors in agreement, tense, inflection, and case.
  • Make proper use of all language mechanics (spelling, capitalization, and punctuation).
  • Choose words that are precise and engaging.
  • Organize writing well enough to hold readers’ interest.
